When reflecting on past summer seasons, many of us immediately have memories of family road trips and sunny adventures in far-flung destinations. As we are all acutely aware, 2020 has presented us with a unique set of circumstances, where in many instances we have had to adapt and improvise our plans in order to make summer magic happen. That being said, with big challenges come great opportunities — and for many families, 2020 has been a welcome “reset button”, reminding all of us about what is truly important. For the last few months, British Columbia residents have been embracing our province’s abundant beauty, deepening bonds with friends, creating relationships in their communities, and most of all, spending more quality time with family.

For many people across Southern BC, discovering family-friendly, COVID-approved activities is this summer’s biggest priority. Day trips are ideal — you get to have all of the sunny fun, while maintaining a safe home environment and saving some money, too (in uncertain times, that is always a bonus!) For this reason, the Township of Langley has become a popular destination for families looking to create special memories this summer and fall. With an abundance of activities to choose from, there is something for quite literally everyone — and Langley’s central location means that you can plan an incredible day and still be home for dinner.

First up, visit Krause Berry Farms and discover their incredible “u-pick” fields — blueberry season is here and is always a crowd favourite! In addition to berry picking, Krause Berry Farms also has a Waffle Bar, as well as a gorgeous market and bakery — enjoy some baked goods while you explore their lush lavender gardens. The cherry on top — Krause Berry Farms also has an award-winning Estate Winery! Purchase bottles of delicious fruit wine to have at home, embark on a wine tasting, or enjoy a glass of cider or sangria on their sundrenched patio.

Another great way to explore Langley is by horseback. A number of local farms offer trail riding, equestrian activities and horseback riding lessons. We recommend checking out Glen Valley Stables — the owners have been big game guides for over 40 years and are highly experienced riders and owners. Riding a horse is an unbelievable experience that everyone should try at least once — and with horses of all sizes in their stable, Glen Valley is sure to have the perfect horse for you. Reservations are available year-round.

If hiking and exploring on foot is your jam, Langley has a huge network of parks waiting for you to discover. One of our favourite spots is Campbell Valley Regional Park — from densely wooded forests to rolling hills with bleached grass, there is a huge amount of terrain to take in. Meander through the beautiful Shaggy Mane Trail alongside trail horses or discover the scenic Little River Loop and Perimeter Trail, both of which are wheelchair accessible. There’s also a fantastic off-leash dog area for families who want to bring their furry friends along. If the summer heat has you feeling a little hot after exploring the trails, cool off up the street at the Brookswood Water Park! One of the five spray parks in the Township of Langley, Brookswood Water Park is a family favourite and has a huge variety of play equipment for kids, as well as public washroom facilities.

Speaking of cooling off, what could be better on a summer day than a scoop of frozen deliciousness! Maria’s Gelato features premium local baking, cold-pressed juices, and of course, authentic gelato. We recommend strolling down to the Fort-to-Fort Trail on the nearby Fraser River and taking in the gorgeous views of Golden Ears and McMillan Island.

These locations are just the tip of the iceberg — when it comes to having safe and accessible summer fun, the Township of Langley is the place to be. Come discover for yourself why Langley is beloved by families of all ages and the fastest-growing municipality in Metro Vancouver. We’ll see you there!
