Langley’s Old Yale Road is one of the first roads to be paved in the province.
First Nations People, now known as the Sto:lo, are thought to have been the principal occupants of most of the Fraser Valley.
It was 150 years ago that British Columbia came to be, when the Hudson’s Bay Company lobbied the British Parliament to create the crown colony of British Columbia.
Governor James Douglas delivered the proclamation in the Big House at Fort Langley on November 19th, 1858. The history of Langley dates back to the mid 1800’s and is built on the province’s fur trade. The community was named after Thomas Langley, who was a Hudson Bay Company Director from 1800 to 1830.
The Fort was a vital link in the Hudson’s Bay Company’s trading system. Their first connection was with the Coast Salish people where furs and salmon were exchanged. Eventually, produce from the rich and fertile lands of the valley became the mainstay of the company farms.
Today, the Langley’s are represented by the Township of Langley, an energetic, bustling municipality of approximately 100,000 people. Known as a “Community of Communities”, the Township is home to several distinct neighbourhoods which offer everything from restaurants, night spots, and movie theatres, to heritage sites, equestrian centres, and world class wineries. Also in abundance are the outdoor and recreational experiences in parks, trails, golf courses and green spaces.
The City of Langley is a community of over 25,000 people and is positioned in a rapidly growing area within the Langley’s. Strategically located, the City of Langley is widely known as an award winning city. With an inspiring vision of “The Place to Be”, for arts and culture, sports, shopping and more, they have become a hub of activity for all types of visitors. While the City of Langley has managed to retain its small city atmosphere and community spirit, they offer all the amenities of any urban centre.
