It is only the end of July and I can already say that it has been one of those summers! I’m not talking about the amazing stretch of blue skies, bountiful berry season or lazy weekends spent soaking up the sun. This is the year that friends and family chose to visit B.C. and in particular – me. In my world, we call this VFR tourism or simply, visiting friends and relatives. In recent weeks, I have become a master at my craft, showcasing all the amazing things to see and do in my own backyard. I’ll never forget my cousin’s question this past spring when I suggested she break tradition of spending her whole summer at the cottage north of Toronto and actually leave Ontario. I thought it would be a great way to celebrate her 60th birthday by experiencing B.C. for the first time in her life. “Is there anything to do there?” she asked. The heartfelt thank-you’s, the overweight suitcase charge at the airport, and the numerous calls since she left last week telling me how much this trip touched her is every indication that we found a lot of wonderful things to see and experience.
This weekend I will welcome friends visiting from Calgary and I expect it will be another fun-filled and adventurous time. What is so great about my friends, they are back due to popular demand and for the second consecutive BC Day long weekend because they had such an impressive time last year. But this time – they have come with a list of the places they want to return to and new things they want to seek. That makes my job easy. The only thing left to do is stock the rack and fridge with a few of my favorite Langley wines and treats and try not to cry when I fill up the gas tank.
The BC long weekend has always been one that I look forward to, but with some hesitation. It marks the month of August, and in my mind, 31 days until fall and then… But, the BC long weekend is also the kick off to the season that delivers some of the most unique celebrations, festivals and events that this region has to offer. Have a safe, friends and family filled BC Day long weekend Langley and be sure to take some time to take in a few of the many activities taking place in our communities this weekend.
