Tree Hunting Traditions

Categories: Activities & Recreation, Agritourism, Heritage & Culture, Shopping & Services

I don’t know about you, but as soon as Halloween is over, I start getting anxious for Christmas.  I know the holiday season can be a headache for many… worries about getting all our gifts bought and wrapped on time take up most of our thoughts, and all we seem to do is shop shop shop.  Last minute deals pop up everywhere, our mailboxes become filled with holiday flyers, and television ad’s promote the latest techy device that we just ‘have’ to have.  I try not to let these thoughts get to me.  We need to focus on what’s really important.  The Christmas holiday means many things to different people, but to me it has always been a time to celebrate traditions, spend time with our families and spread joy to those around us.

Who’s Getting Fresh?

Category: Shopping & Services

The Downtown Langley Business Association’s new “Get Fresh” program which was launched in May of this year has been a hit with local merchants and businesses.  It was created from the desire to revitalize the downtown core by offering interested businesses the opportunity to apply for grants designed to improve the overall appearance of their business.  The four grant types include merchandising, exterior painting, awning and signage cleaning, and facade improvements.  Businesses are able to apply for one or all of these grants and so far the DLBA has received 44 letters of intent.  The next time you’re in downtown Langley, you may not recognize your favourite shop!

5 Things I Bet You Didn’t Know You Could Find in Langley!

As a fairly recent new resident to the area, I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing many new things, and have brought an outsiders view to my work which complemented that of my coworkers; most of whom were born and raised in Langley.  I had to learn the routes throughout the community; how to get to the grocery store, where the local farmers market is, which the best exit off the freeway is to get to where I needed to go, and so on.  Because of my many exploratory travels, I had the opportunity to discover a lot about a place I really knew nothing about.

Artfully Displayed

Categories: Activities & Recreation, Shopping & Services

I’ve always boasted about the artistic talent in the Fraser Valley.  There are reminders everywhere – from the beautiful galleries and public art displays to the many unique celebrations such as “Art in the Vines” at Township 7 wineries or the annual “Arts Alive” Festival.  I’m a frustrated artist, and while I’ve never put a paint brush to canvas or created something so spectacular that I could start to think of a new career path, I have long appreciated the beauty of art and respected the depth of the natural talent of an artist.  Someone once told me that an artist lies in each of us – I’m not so sure when I see how little the stick men have evolved in my now adult children’s drawings – but when a friend called to ask me to accompany her this past weekend on the annual Langley Art Studio Tour, I cleared my calendar for the day.

First Day of Autumn

Children are back in school, the heat of the summer has gone, and a crisp breeze makes you zip up your jacket and throw on a scarf. As you head out the door you are met with golden leaves scattered about the lawn at your feet. It’s autumn.

Langley Art Studio Tour 2012

Categories: Activities & Recreation, Shopping & Services

Every September, the Langley arts community’s collaborative efforts form the well known Langley Art Studio Tour; a self-guided tour spread across two weekends in late September. The tour showcases local art studios that wind a route throughout picturesque Langley. Headed by co-founders (and artists) Deborah Strong of Cat and Mouse Designs and Vivian Harder of Thunderfoot Studio, the goal of the Langley Art Studio Tour is “to showcase the visual arts in the Langley community and create connections between artists working in isolation from one another”.
