Open for the Season: Farmer’s Markets

Categories: Activities & Recreation, Agritourism, Shopping & Services, Wine & Food

“It’s the most wonderful time of the year”…that is the song that has been going around in my head lately.  Yes, I realize it is not Christmas or back to school but it IS one week until the opening day of the Langley Community Farmers Market and that is a little like Christmas to me!  If you have not had a chance to visit a Farmer’s Market in previous years, you are absolutely missing out!  Every Wednesday from 2:00 – 6:00pm in the Courtyard of Kwantlen Polytechnic University, you will find more than 30 vendors that “Make it, Bake it or Grow it”.  Or spend your Saturday’s strolling through the garden of the Bedford House Restaurant in Fort Langley while browsing the tents of the Fort Langley Village Farmers’ Market, which takes place from 10am – 3pm and includes another great array of market vendors.  The newest market to the area is Milner Village Market located at the Milner Village Garden Centre also on Saturday’s starting June 1st from 10am – 3pm.

My Perfect Weekend

Categories: Activities & Recreation, Heritage & Culture, Itineraries, Shopping & Services, Wine & Food

The weather this past weekend could not have been more co-operative for writing about a Perfect Weekend.  Now of course one person’s perfect weekend may not be another’s but when I travel I love to read about personal experiences, especially from a local’s perspective.  As I have mentioned on this blog before, I was born and raised in Langley. I have watched it change and grow, and this year seemed like an appropriate time to reflect a bit on my home town.  I have a birthday coming up that may or may not start with a 4 and end with an 0.  So with that I thought I would share with you what my perfect weekend in Langley would include and maybe take a little trip or two down memory lane while we are at it.

Celebrating our Mothers

Categories: Activities & Recreation, Agritourism, Heritage & Culture, Shopping & Services, Wine & Food

Mother’s Day is just around the corner, and just in case you haven’t already, mark your calendar for the second Sunday in May – this year, May 12th.   Now, not everyone is a Mother but the day is also a day to celebrate and honor motherhood, maternal bonds and the influence of mothers.  Some of us may have gained a new Mom through marriage or have a motherly, nurturing person that influences our lives.  I am a Mom to two great kids that make my life more interesting and fun than I could have ever imagined.  I have also gained four “part time” sons as a billet family for the Langley Rivermen.  I am also fortunate to have a Mom and Mom in law that are there to help whenever I need it.

From Planting to Plate

Categories: Activities & Recreation, Agritourism, Shopping & Services

What a fantastic stretch of weather we have had this past week.  The flip-flops, shorts and T-shirts seem to have made their way from the back to the front of the closet and there is nothing like that first feeling of sun after far too many months of rain and cool temperatures.  This past weekend I couldn’t help myself and had to make a trip to a local nursery.  A few of my bulbs have popped through in the garden and I wanted to see what other bits of colour I could add.  I had a feeling it might be too early for bedding plants and the very knowledgeable staff I encountered at our local nurseries confirmed that for me.  While it’s safe to say the May long weekend typically marks official planting season, I can’t help wonder how many eager gardeners have taken a leap of faith and planted early.

New Year’s Resolutions

I don’t know about you, but I’m not sure where January went.  Were we not all just ringing in 2013, taking down the Christmas tree and excited about a fresh start by making some New Years Resolutions? I read an article a few days ago that said that 80% of New Years Resolutions are broken by January 20th- yikes that seems pretty short lived.   If you find yourself in that boat we thought we could give you some ideas of what you can do in and about Langley to get your resolutions back on track.

A Petite Piece of Paris

Categories: Activities & Recreation, Heritage & Culture, Shopping & Services, Wine & Food

I bet you didn’t know you can visit Paris in Fort Langley, but it’s true. Right here on Glover Road in a beautiful, and some believe haunted heritage home, resides the most wonderful Parisian-inspired boutique and café – Little White House & Co.

The local gem, run by Cheryl Krecsy and her daughter Natasha Krecsy, carries everything from clothing and spa-quality products to lovely home décor items. In every nook and cranny there’s a whimsical treasure sure to delight. It truly is one of the most unique shopping experiences here in the Fraser Valley.

Horses Loose in Willowbrook

Categories: Activities & Recreation, Shopping & Services

A year long public art project in collaboration between the Langley Arts Council and the Langley Horse Federation is now on display at the Willowbrook Shopping Centre. Visit the Horseshoe Trail between January 14 and February 3 to view the many horses which have been transformed into brilliant works of art by local artists. The goal of the project was to “use art to enhance the community’s agricultural heritage and to acknowledge Langley as the Horse Capital of BC”. Willowbrook Shopping Centre is holding a number of events in conjunction with the exhibit including a Horsing Around Kids Party on January 19, Meet the Artists Days on January 26 and February 2, as well as offering a contest with the chance to win a $1,000+ Horsing Around Langley activity package including horse riding lessons, dining, entertainment, shopping, and more.

Tree Hunting Traditions

Categories: Activities & Recreation, Agritourism, Heritage & Culture, Shopping & Services

I don’t know about you, but as soon as Halloween is over, I start getting anxious for Christmas.  I know the holiday season can be a headache for many… worries about getting all our gifts bought and wrapped on time take up most of our thoughts, and all we seem to do is shop shop shop.  Last minute deals pop up everywhere, our mailboxes become filled with holiday flyers, and television ad’s promote the latest techy device that we just ‘have’ to have.  I try not to let these thoughts get to me.  We need to focus on what’s really important.  The Christmas holiday means many things to different people, but to me it has always been a time to celebrate traditions, spend time with our families and spread joy to those around us.
