Tree Hunting Traditions

Categories: Activities & Recreation, Agritourism, Heritage & Culture, Shopping & Services

I don’t know about you, but as soon as Halloween is over, I start getting anxious for Christmas.  I know the holiday season can be a headache for many… worries about getting all our gifts bought and wrapped on time take up most of our thoughts, and all we seem to do is shop shop shop.  Last minute deals pop up everywhere, our mailboxes become filled with holiday flyers, and television ad’s promote the latest techy device that we just ‘have’ to have.  I try not to let these thoughts get to me.  We need to focus on what’s really important.  The Christmas holiday means many things to different people, but to me it has always been a time to celebrate traditions, spend time with our families and spread joy to those around us.

Reel Nostalgia

Categories: Activities & Recreation, Heritage & Culture

Some of my fondest childhood memories relate to Friday nights at the drive in movie theatre.  It was a tradition when I was young and growing up in that magical decade – “the sixties”.  Okay – so I’m aging myself, but these days I’m becoming especially vulnerable to anything from the period of my youth.  Just ask any baby boomer!

Douglas Day Celebrations

Categories: Activities & Recreation, Heritage & Culture

Douglas Day is held on November 19th every year and will be celebrated by many this month at the Fort Langley National Historic Site on November 17th.  Douglas Day, the day to celebrate the establishment of the colony of British Columbia and its first governor James Douglas is held every year in Fort Langley, also known as the Birthplace of BC who hosts a Caribbean celebration in coordination with Parks Canada, the Fort Langley Legacy Foundation, and the Guyanese Canadian Cultural Association of BC.  Many are unaware of James Douglas’ Caribbean roots, but indeed he hails from Guyana, a country on the north-eastern shore of South America.

Photo Update: We Remember

Category: Heritage & Culture

The importance of Remembrance Day is instilled in Canadian youth at a young age.  We learn about Canada’s role in the World Wars, why the date of November 11th is so important, and what the symbol of the red poppy is.  As children, many of us took part in ceremonies at school as well as attended with our families, ones held within our communities.  Every year on November 11th I would bundle myself up in coats, toques and mitts and head to our Civic Centre to listen to the stories, salute the Veterans and watch the parade of wreaths be laid.  After the ceremony inside was over we would head outside to the cenotaph and watch the parade of which my Dad and brother, along with their scout group were often part of.  We would stand in silence at eleven o’clock to remember those who have fought for our great nation.

Creating, maintaining and keeping a blog interesting takes a particular type of finesses, of which Tourism Langley clearly possesses. There’s always so much going on in Langley (be it City or Township) and now we have a professional venue for letting our community and beyond know what we’re all about, and more importantly, why they should come visit.

Haunted History

Categories: Activities & Recreation, Heritage & Culture

I’m not saying I believe or I don’t believe but either way I am scared of ghosts. And just in case, and because you never know, I randomly put out into the universe “Ghosts… you are not welcome in my house.” You are not supposed to invite them in. That being said, I was strangely SO EXCITED to go on Fort Langley National Historic Sites Grave Tales – a tour through the ‘haunted’ locations in the village of Fort Langley.

5 Things I Bet You Didn’t Know You Could Find in Langley!

Categories: Activities & Recreation, Agritourism, Heritage & Culture, Itineraries, Shopping & Services, Wine & Food

As a fairly recent new resident to the area, I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing many new things, and have brought an outsiders view to my work which complemented that of my coworkers; most of whom were born and raised in Langley.  I had to learn the routes throughout the community; how to get to the grocery store, where the local farmers market is, which the best exit off the freeway is to get to where I needed to go, and so on.  Because of my many exploratory travels, I had the opportunity to discover a lot about a place I really knew nothing about.

A Haunting Tour into the Past – Fort Langley’s “Grave Tales”

Categories: Activities & Recreation, Heritage & Culture, Itineraries, Wine & Food

Fort Langley offers ghastly, ghostly and eerily erudite October walking tours!

One recent evening, we meet our guide, who’s outfitted in Hudson Bay trader garb. While fortifying ourselves with Fort Wine Company’s cranberry wine, fine BC merlot and delicious local cuisine at Beatniks’ Bistro, Amn Johal introduces us to some of Fort Langley’s monthly themed events. “Grave Tales 2012 itself is based on scholarly Fort Langley research, residents’ insights…and notable paranormal encounters!”
