Celebrating our Mothers

Categories: Activities & Recreation, Agritourism, Heritage & Culture, Shopping & Services, Wine & Food

Mother’s Day is just around the corner, and just in case you haven’t already, mark your calendar for the second Sunday in May – this year, May 12th.   Now, not everyone is a Mother but the day is also a day to celebrate and honor motherhood, maternal bonds and the influence of mothers.  Some of us may have gained a new Mom through marriage or have a motherly, nurturing person that influences our lives.  I am a Mom to two great kids that make my life more interesting and fun than I could have ever imagined.  I have also gained four “part time” sons as a billet family for the Langley Rivermen.  I am also fortunate to have a Mom and Mom in law that are there to help whenever I need it.

From Planting to Plate

Categories: Activities & Recreation, Agritourism, Shopping & Services

What a fantastic stretch of weather we have had this past week.  The flip-flops, shorts and T-shirts seem to have made their way from the back to the front of the closet and there is nothing like that first feeling of sun after far too many months of rain and cool temperatures.  This past weekend I couldn’t help myself and had to make a trip to a local nursery.  A few of my bulbs have popped through in the garden and I wanted to see what other bits of colour I could add.  I had a feeling it might be too early for bedding plants and the very knowledgeable staff I encountered at our local nurseries confirmed that for me.  While it’s safe to say the May long weekend typically marks official planting season, I can’t help wonder how many eager gardeners have taken a leap of faith and planted early.

Langley Wine Tour

Categories: Agritourism, Wine & Food

You don’t have to ask me twice to join a wine tour through Langley.  A few weeks ago it was parents’ weekend for the Langley Rivermen.  For the past four years we have been a billet family for our local Junior A hockey team, the team recruits players from Canada and the USA and those players need a home away from home during hockey season.  It has been a great experience and part of that is meeting the families of these great young men that call our home, well home for part of the year.  After the parents’ breakfast Saturday morning our billets parents asked about what they could do for the rest of the day, they were thinking of heading into Vancouver to see some sights.  Taylor Henderson, the Director of Operations for the Langley Rivermen heard the question and suggested they tour some of Langley’s wineries.  Now what kind of host would I be if I didn’t offer to go along with them?  Clearly Taylor was thinking the same thing and it took less than a minute for each of us to let our spouses know we were off to play tour guide.

New Year’s Resolutions

I don’t know about you, but I’m not sure where January went.  Were we not all just ringing in 2013, taking down the Christmas tree and excited about a fresh start by making some New Years Resolutions? I read an article a few days ago that said that 80% of New Years Resolutions are broken by January 20th- yikes that seems pretty short lived.   If you find yourself in that boat we thought we could give you some ideas of what you can do in and about Langley to get your resolutions back on track.

Tree Hunting Traditions

Categories: Activities & Recreation, Agritourism, Heritage & Culture, Shopping & Services

I don’t know about you, but as soon as Halloween is over, I start getting anxious for Christmas.  I know the holiday season can be a headache for many… worries about getting all our gifts bought and wrapped on time take up most of our thoughts, and all we seem to do is shop shop shop.  Last minute deals pop up everywhere, our mailboxes become filled with holiday flyers, and television ad’s promote the latest techy device that we just ‘have’ to have.  I try not to let these thoughts get to me.  We need to focus on what’s really important.  The Christmas holiday means many things to different people, but to me it has always been a time to celebrate traditions, spend time with our families and spread joy to those around us.

Pumpkin Leftovers

Categories: Activities & Recreation, Agritourism, Wine & Food

Well it’s November 1st and that means that many of your stomachs are full of Halloween treats, and your compost bins are full of pumpkin.  If you picked this year’s pumpkin directly from the field at Aldor Acres farm, then you probably saw this sign. Albert and Dorothy, the owners of the Aldor Acres Pumpkin Patch don’t let their squash’s go to waste after the spooky holiday, they are reused – as food for their herd of cows!
